  • Our Sustainable Solution

    broken image

Australia has witnessed a notable decline in timber supply over the past 80 years, largely influenced by stringent government regulations, evolving forestry management practices, environmental challenges, and heightened commercial pressures. In response to this trend and to meet current demands, the industry has resorted to harvesting younger and less stable trees. In exploring innovative solutions, we discovered a potential in repurposing timber waste. Sydney alone produces 446,000 tonnes of timber waste.

Recognising the value in Rescuing and transforming this resource, we’ve developed engineered products that not only retain the beloved characteristics of Australian timber but also offer enhanced stability and reduced weight. Through years of research and development, we’ve achieved stunning results, providing sustainable alternatives that marry environmental responsibility with exceptional quality.

  • Discover the Difference

Our doors are engineered and designed for stability and durability utilize a strong and reliable core material which reduces warping, twisting, and shrinking, all are common issues with solid timber doors, particularly in fluctuating environments. Understanding the specific conditions where one of our doors will be installed is crucial for ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Factors such as BAL ratings, the orientation of the opening, and the surrounding natural environment play significant roles in determining the suitability of the door. Factors like sunlight exposure, prevailing winds, and moisture levels help us select the right timber species, finishes, and installation methods to mitigate potential issues. By thoroughly assessing the opening's conditions, including any surfactant coverings or protective measures, allows us to help make informed decisions and ensure the door's performance, durability, and aesthetic appeal align with its unique requirements of the environment.

    broken image

To determining the most suitable door for each application, we simplify the process into three straightforward questions:

    1. Door Appeal: What aesthetic appeal are you aiming to achieve with your door? This helps us understand your design preferences and style goals
    2. BAL Rating and Practical Application: What is the BAL rating for the door's location, and what are the practical requirements of its application? Knowing the BAL rating ensures compliance with fire safety regulations, while understanding the practical needs helps tailor the door's features to its specific usage, such as heavy-duty, high-traffic, or weather-exposed areas.
    3. Core Suitability: Does the standard core meet the BAL rating requirements, desired door thickness, and compatibility with hardware applications? This ensures that the door's core material aligns with current fire safety standards, desired dimensions, stability and accommodates the chosen hardware, such as locks, hinges, and handles, for seamless functionality.

By addressing these three questions, we can assist you in selecting the ideal door solution that combines aesthetic appeal, safety compliance, and practical functionality to meet your unique needs and preferences.

  • Things to Consider When Ordering a Door

    A simple guide

    1

    Door Deisgn

There are two main design categories for doors: flush panels and open frames. Flush panels, available in horizontal or vertical grain, form the aesthetic foundation of the door. Open frame doors, which can feature solid panels or glass inserts, add architectural interest and versatility to a space.

    2

    Functional Openings

Creating a functional opening involves more than just the door itself. You'll need to consider if a jamb is required and if the door need a pivot, or are standard hinges practable.

    3

    Timber Selection

Assessing timber density/ variety is essential, especially for high-traffic areas prone to potential damage from handbags and school bags. Opting for denser timber varieties can mitigate the risk of bruising and ensure long-lasting durability.

A point to keep in mind is that in areas with high exposure to weather, timber will expand and shrink depending on the moisture content. Tighter the grain structure, the more likely the timber is to push against itself creating stress points on the skins

If the house's overall aesthetic allows, we suggest opting for rustic sleeper skins. The pronounced weathering on these timber skins allows for greater flexibility, resulting in reduced stress on the joints

    Hardware Selection

Our approach to selecting hardware is thorough and personalised, ensuring that we meet your specific needs and desires, especially considering that the required hardware can vary from door to door based on its functionality and convenience. When it comes to hinges, we carefully consider factors such as door size, weight, and usage frequency, as well as any special features like a hold-open mechanism or a soss hinge.

Lock options are just as diverse, offering a range of choices from traditional mortice locks to cutting-edge smart locks with internet connectivity.

  • Finishes

    broken image

    Raw/ Brushed/ Sanded

Raw finishes are great if you are trying to achieve an aged - silvered look, or want to finish the door yourself.

However, it's important to note that leaving it untreated for too long can cause the door to dry unevenly, resulting in a bow or twist. To prevent this, we recommend applying a finish as soon as you exept delivery. Not doing so could result in your warranty being voided.

    Preservative Oil

A great way to maintained and brighten the timber. Our standard product is the Feast Watson range of external cladding oils in either; Natural or Black.

To help cut the brightness of the Natural and reduce the darkness of the black, we also offer a 50/50 mix that adds the warmth of the timber and highlights the grain.

We can also use the Cutek range, for a green toned oil, so we don't have to worry about the warmth from Natural

    Stain

If you want to tone or recolour your timber to match the existing colour of your house without breaking the budget, a good place to start is by determining the colour tone of your timber. Timber can either have a warm tone (such as red, pink) or a cool tone (such as green). If you need to match a pre-existing colour, you can use the correct tone of timber to get the closest match.

Staining is also an option if the colour of the timber is too weak for the room or not brown enough.

    Acrylic Clear

Unlike the oil finishes, acrylic is designed be a protective film over the timber. Giving it a synthetic feel.

Acrylic is great for trying to keep the colour of the timber without darkening, tinting or yellowing straight away. Unfortunately, over time, the clear will yellow.

Maintenance for Acrylic clears, typically involves sanding the old coat off the timber and re applying. This process can take up to a few days to complete. The process will need to be repeated if clear starts to crack or peel away, typically happens after 2-3 years.

    White Liming

For a classic Scandinavian look, white liming on American oak can be a great choice. To make sure you get the most out of this look, we recommend you start with wire brushing the timber. This will really enhance the grain and make the liming mix stand out. White lime can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications. To finish the project, we suggest sealing the timber with an acrylic clear to protect it from the elements.

    Black Wash

Trying to create an aged finished in a controlled environment is always difficult, and can look as if it's manufactured.

Our wash for doors is similar to the process of white liming, and as a result gives you a unique finish.

To finish off our Black wash and preserve it, we add a clear Acrylic.

    Rustic

Taking the weathered and aged timber from railway sleepers and wharfs, we are able to salvage and use the timber for our Entry doors.

To keep the rustic and weathered look of the timber, we start off with cleaning them of all residue of its previous life, dig out all spikes, nails or barnacles, and clean up with the wire brush removing all dirt and critters.

Once the door is assembled and ready for delivery, we seal it with the preservative oil, in either a 50/50 mix or just Natural.

    Charred

Traditional Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi has recently been picked back up by the west, and we understand why.

Traditionally to do a Yakisugi finish, the timber originally chosen would be Cypress or Cedar and charred to help prevent Decay, insect infiltration and increase resistance to fire. As we don't work with Cypress or Cedar normally, we can not guarantee the finish will share the same benefits.

We can also use a charred effect paint, (image attached above). If we do char the timber, we seal it with a clear to help prevent black soot transferring to everything and everyone who walks by it.

    Bleached - Beach

Bleaching the timber can be an uncertain process as to how much of the original color can be pulled out. This typically results in a slightly pale yellow hue in the wood, which is difficult to fully bleach out to a white. To take the yellow hue out of the bleached timber, a custom liming mix can be added to create a grey, white, or even darker than normal look. To ensure the desired outcome, a finishing sample with the timber used on your door should be produced to view the final tones and how the bleach will affect the timber.
